About me

Karen Bishi and family

My feminism

I believe that society is structured in a way that disadvantages women, and non-binary people and creates inequality. Women and non-binary people routinely experience prejudice, discrimination and harassment which all too often leads to them being held-back, whilst men progress ahead of them. I am a feminist as I believe that the inequality that exists is wrong and that we deserve better.

Women and non-binary people often face additional struggles as a result of other aspects of their identity, for example racism, homophobia and trans-phobia. As Audre Lorde said "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even if her shackles are very different from my own". I believe in intersectionality and that feminism should be inclusive of all. I am inspired by people, past and present, who stand up to oppression in all its forms.

I've seen too many amazing women and non-binary people feeling constrained by external pressures, routinely underestimating their abilities and downplaying their achievements. I am committed to do all I can to change this. My coaching and consultancy is designed to empower those I'm working with to support them to overcome the barriers to their success and also that of others.

I have a firm commitment to social justice and have always worked in roles that have sought to empower others. In am a Consultant for the NCVO and a Women Leading in Education Coach for the Teaching Schools Council. I am also a Trustee at Youth Access.

I was previously a Talent Development Manager at the National Union of Students and Head of Advocacy Services at Cambridge House and CPSL Mind.

In my late 20s I moved to London. I was single, child-free and lived in a commune. A decade later, I found myself married with children, juggling a career, family and my own time. Becoming a wife and a mother changed my life in so many ways, and led me to do a lot of soul searching. I was made redundant whilst on maternity leave, which gave me to impetus to consider what was really important to me, and to be proactive in steering my life in the direction that was right for me. Having already trained as a coach, I used this crossroad as an opportunity to seek motivation to set up my coaching and consultancy business and achieve my own life goals. I believe in leading by example and my own success is testament to the power of coaching.

I also love theatre, dance, yoga, travel and scuba diving. I am a qualified Reiki practitioner too and can offer this to you upon request.
